Just a comparison of today versus Sunday. On the bright side her hair grows really fast! AND, a camouflage pair of pants and shirt and she is set for Halloween.

GI Brie
Can you tell which hairless tyke is Sean and which is Brie? Apparently, there was an incident yesterday at the Vestal home. Jenny called me in a tizzy because Ryan had gone in the bathroom and found that Sean or one of the girls had found the clippers and plugged them in. Sean got the blame as when Ryan walked in the clippers were in Sean's hand and Brie's hair was all over the floor. There were also scissors involved. Personally I think after examining the evidence that this haircut took the efforts of all three of them. I told Jenny to find the humor in it and move on. She kept saying Brie was ugly. I told her it was impossible for Brie to be ugly. It is an adjustment to see her bald as Brie has always been identified by her beautiful curls. Brie's self conscious about it. I told her I really liked her hair and she was a beautiful army princess. She didn't really buy it.

Hockey, yard work and other stuff
Have you ever wondered how bad your car would smell if you put a bunch of stinky shoes and a couple of used cat litter boxes in it and let it sit in the sun and heat up to 100 degrees? No, you've never wondered? Well, I'm here to tell you that's what hockey gear smells like when you leave it in the back of your car. Ughh. That being said, we love hockey and are very proud of David. He is doing great. He has hockey practice at 7:00 am two days a week and 9:30 pm one day a week. You skate when you get ice time! He's only had one high school game thus far and they won 8:1. I don't know if it is hockey or just High School but David has been a really pleasant teenager. Quite a change from the morose Jr High kid of last year. I'm very glad that the aliens who stole him have returned him! I was sitting outside of the recreation center at 8 am waiting for David and I was watching all the 60 plus crowd going into the rec center to swim and I thought when I am 60 plus I'll still be sitting here waiting for a kid. I would post a picture of David's hockey gear but since the computer doesn't do scratch and sniff you would be cheated of the full affect! Sean and I did a ton of yard work this week. (Along with some help from my friend Bonnie). Sean loved being in the yard for so many hours. He played under the deck, jumped on the trampoline and spent time just sitting on his blanket looking around. The funniest thing he did was play with Bonnie's dog Spike while wearing a flower pot for a hat. How he balanced that pot on his head while he played I do not understand.
Brie turned three so we took a little excursion to Discovery Gateway. We had a birthday lunch at the heli pad. Nate didn't think the helicopter was so great. It had a recording of a real helicopter and was very noisy. Nate wanted Alika to get him the heck out of there.Sean, Nate and Dan really liked the jeep. Dan said it was the same jeep he used to play on at the Children's museum when he was a kid.
After playing at Discovery for a couple of hours we went to Build a Bear. Of course by then the kids were exhausted but hey Steph and I wanted to see some bears built. It was pretty funny. I gave the kids each a choice of three bears. Sean picked his first. I took the bear he picked and handed him the unstuffed bear and he looked at me like I was crazy and had skinned his poor bear. Mind you he and the bear had just met but they were already forming a relationship. Kylie got her bear stuffed first and Bries' second so Sean had a little time to figure out what was going on. He did not care for the bear stuffing man at all.
Nate was last but certainly not least. He was the most creative. No, he wasn't going to use his foot to push the peddle to stuff his bear he was going to use his hands. It worked just fine, he stuffed a very nice bear.
And that's a wrap at the Gateway. Don, Sean (with his Bear in a box) and Alika. Alika bought that dress and shoes while we are at the mall.

Speaking of Alika, she had a rough week. She didn't pass her cosmetology practical boards. It's been real hard for her. She took them last month and passed the cosmetology part and failed the barbering part. No big deal she thought, barbering isn't her thing. She studied really hard for barbering and figured she was good to go. We had heard that the testing site where she took her exam was much tougher than the one in Sunset. (That's the word among new graduates) She scheduled her second test for Sunset. When she walked into test low and behold it was the same tester she had in Woods Cross. We decided she should have feigned fainting and rescheduled. This time the lady passed her for barbering and failed her for cosmetology. The frustrating thing is they don't give them any feedback as to what the did wrong which makes it very hard to improve. She was devastated but handled it well. She can take them again in thirty days. She'll get it this time.

Exciting Development
About thirty minutes ago Jenny and Ryan signed over legal custody of Sean! Can you believe it? I'm not sure that I can.
We are happy for Sean. It was really tough for Jenny and I feel bad for her. I can't imagine losing custody of three sons. But, I know it really is what is best for Sean. Hopefully, it will make life easier for Jenny and the girls too. The picture above was taken yesterday. Sean was really happy to see Kylie and Brie they had lots of fun playing. Yippee, now we can take Sean with us on vacation.

Sean's World
Sean and his beloved blankie
I haven’t given any Sean updates lately and thought some of you might be wondering what is going on. Sean’s dad went to jail two months ago after being arrested for aggravated assault. He has been serving time for eight previous charges. He got out of jail on bail on Tuesday after finishing his reduced 180 day sentence. Thursday he went to court for the assault charges and the prosecutions witness (the drunk he beat up) did not show up so the charges were dropped. If he pays his remaining court fines he should be free and clear of the judicial system. During the time he was in jail the state was paying daycare for the kids. Jenny wanted to keep Sean during the week and take him to daycare with the girls. I didn’t understand it but Sean liked daycare and I really didn’t have any choice in the matter. I would pick Sean up Thursday and we would keep him until Monday morning and Don would drop him off on his way to work. Its’ very strange, when Jenny has Sean she calls me two, three, five, eight times a day. When I have Sean she doesn’t call at all or calls once. It seems like it should be the reverse. It’s like she wants to make sure I don’t forget her. It’s been stressful for Sean because he really likes the routine of our house but he has enjoyed seeing his sisters. When he comes back after three nights he won’t feed himself. He just sits at the table and points at what he wants you to feed him. After a day or two he starts feeding himself. Sometimes when he comes home he doesn’t talk for a couple of hours. Once he has his blanket, a bath, eats, watches a little Sesame Street and reads about eight books he gets back into the swing of things. All and all he adapts to the change really well. He is a trooper about it.
Sean loving the kitty that doesn't want to be loved
I was worried that with Ryan out of jail that I wouldn’t see him for awhile. Fortunately, for the time being at least that is not the case. After two days (instead of three) Jenny called and asked me to pick Sean up from daycare. I told Ryan that I hoped being in jail was a life changing experience and that he got his act together. He said he was starting high school classes and had learned his lesson. I would like to say I am optimistic but really I’m not. Since he’s been out of jail Jenny hasn’t gone to work. She worked two weeks at Burger King. That s how long she’s been at every job she’s had since I’ve known her. She hasn’t told me that she’s quit she just tells me she didn’t have to work, Mon, Tues, Wed or Thurs. I take that as an ominous sign that neither will have jobs; they will lose all their state funding and spiral (that’s assuming they have risen to a point from which to spiral). I am very grateful that Jenny has the Implanon and won’t be getting pregnant this week. Her last baby was a “daddy got out of jail conception.” I told Jenny I was glad that she couldn’t get pregnant because I didn’t think Heather was ready for another baby yet. (Heather may be ready for a new baby but she sure as heck isn’t ready for another pregnancy and neither am I!!!)
Sean and AJ (his brother from another mother)
Sean is just getting so big and he is so dang smart. AJ asked how Sean could be so smart and I told him I honestly don’t know. All those kids are just as smart as they can be. Sean is talking in full sentences. Yesterday he said “you’re cute and I’m funny.” We were watching a movie in my room and when we walked downstairs it was dark Sean said “where is everybody?” He says: “I don’t want that”, “It’s too hot”, it’s too cold”, let’s read books”. He is conversant and he’s not even two; it’s fascinating the speed at which his vocabulary is growing. He’s past animal noises and body parts, he’s ready to debate and negotiate. I was using a tool and he came up and said “it’s my turn”, I said “no, it’s my turn.” He walked out of the room and came back with his brand new tractor which he handed to me and said, “It’s your turn, that’s my turn.” How can you argue with that? We were eating brownies and ice cream when we got to the end I said “all gone.” He pointed at the pan of brownies on the stove and said “un uh, more please.” How can you argue with that? Nate picked up Grandma’s cane and Sean took it from him and said “no, grandma’s” and put it back by her chair. We had a birthday party for Kylie and sang happy birthday at the kitchen table so now when he sits down he sings “happy birthday.” That is one cute, smart kid and we sure love him.

What's new in Lindsay town
We had lots of visitors this week. On Saturday my cousin Marian and her husband Michael spent the night with us. It was Marian's first visit to Utah. Michael was here on business so she came for the adventure. They went to The Spoken Word and did all the Salt Lake city "stuff." I hadn't seen Marian since my Dad's funeral almost ten years ago so it was lots of fun. My cousin John (Marian's little brother) was in town too. He's looking for a job in Utah. He came for dinner so we were able to visit with him as well. He is hoping to move his wife and two daughters to Utah soon. I guess he heard about our Easter egg hunts and Ginger Bread House parties and knows that this is the place. His wife Julie actually grew up in Bountiful and his father-in-law lives in Heber.
On Sunday Daisy came to visit. Daisy was our exchange student from Brazil my senior year in High School. Six years ago during Alex's senior year Daisy's son Rogerio came and lived with us. We are a two generation exchange student family. It was great to see Daisy after all these years. Her husband was in the US for a conference and she came for a belated 25th wedding anniversary celebration. It's been 30 years since Daisy and I were seniors. I don't know how that can be when I am only 30 years old. Daisy left on Wednesday to meet her husband in NYCOkay, so I look at the 1979 picture versus the 2009 picture and I think, DANG it really has been 30 years! We don't feel like we are almost 50.

Nate came and played with Sean on Saturday while his parents moved. Don was cleaning the garage and they were playing in the dirty, dusty garage while they ate Popsicles. They were all kinds of layers of yucky so I gave them simultaneous sink baths. They were pretty darn cute.
Funny clinic story for the week
I called the House of Hope to schedule an appointment to talk to women about birth control. House of Hope is a live-in facility for drug addicted and alcoholic women with children. A man answered the phone and I said "this is Carol from the 4th street clinic and I want to schedule an appointment to come talk to your women about birth control." The man says "LADY, this is Zipper Asphalt." I said "Oh, so you don't care about birth control." He said, "LADY no one in Utah cares about birth control!" I asked "what is the name of your company again?" He said "Zipper Asphalt" I said "well tell all the men to keep it zipped and then I won't have to go out and talk to people about birth control." He said "good one" and we laughed and hung up. Sounds like a prank call but it really was a wrong number.
