The elephant orphanage is a place where they care for baby elephants for up to eight years as they are re-acclimated to the wild. Baby elephants are of course cute. The only problem was the place was packed. It was the last day of Ramadan which is a holiday and I think everyone in Nairobi decided to go see the elephants.
Lots of pumbas roaming around.
The cutest thing there was a bus load of school children on a field trip. They were staring at the white people like we were the elephants. The kids were adorable. There were several white families there with black babies. I assumed they were new adoptions. I didn't know Kenya did many international adoptions. I asked our driver Rafael about it and he said he'd wondered the same thing. He said it is very hard for people from other countries to adopt from Kenya. I asked if the orphans were taken in by families locally and he said no they stayed in orphanages until they were adults because kids are too expensive and people can't afford to take in extra children.
I am a wife, a mom to five adult kids, a 14 year old, a grandmother, a daughter, a sister, an Aunt, a Registered Nurse, a teacher, a business owner, a friend and a mother in law...
