6th Grade Book Battles

I coached Sean's Book Battle team this year. They were cute and worked hard but unfortunately for all the teams there is no competing against Andrew McBride. That boy has a photographic memory and doesn't miss a question. He was sick today but not sick enough to miss school Team Dynamite Squad took third place.

Sean wanted to place and get a medal but didn't want to win and go to district as it would mean giving up a months of recesses.

Making soap

Took a soap making class with Mardi and Charity. How to make soap out of lye. Interesting but I have no real plans to take up a career in soap making.

CASA kid

I decided in October I wanted to be a Court Appointed Special Advocate for foster kids. I took the 6 weeks of training and in November I was assigned a 7 year old. I've been to two court hearings for him, a ton of meetings and met with his teachers. Sunday was my third month as this kiddos CASA. I've been visiting him at his home but I decided to take him out of the house this visit.  I was a little hesitant as I’ve been told how volatile his behavior can be. He's torn up his classroom at school. When I met his teacher she told me in 30 years of teaching she's never seen such destruction. A couple of months ago he was out with a foster worker and went crazy at a Barnes and Noble and they had to call the police.  My visits with him he's been totally well behaved but I know the potential is there.
His parental rights were terminated years ago and they are working on transitioning him into a really great adoptive family. He's been meeting with the new family for three weeks. They are just perfect for him. The dad is a special ed teacher, the mom is native American like him.
When I picked him up his foster mom gave me medication for “If he gets out of control.” That made me a little nervous. I gave him a choice of the trampoline park or a movie, he chose Sonic the Hedgehog.
He had no trouble leaving his home with me. He had so little trouble that it was a little troubling. I think if a stranger came up to him and offered him candy and told them they would take him somewhere he would jump in the car.
He was excited about seeing a movie and wanted popcorn and a drink. When we got to the theater he wanted everything. I was worried how he would handle the word “no." I told him we are getting popcorn and a drink and that’s it and he was fine. He did keep slurping his Slurpee really loud and at one point I took it from him until he told me he'd stop making the noise. He took that OK too.  He talked about the movies he wanted to see through the 30 minutes of previews. He was interactive throughout the movie. Mostly wanting to know if I was going to take him to more movies.
As soon as the movie was almost over he started telling me not to take him home and presenting all sorts of options for other things we should do. He has a really funny sense of humor. He would hand me pop corn and then say “I licked it.” When we pulled in his drive way I asked whose truck was parked there and he said “Mikes or maybe it is some stranger who came to our house and won’t leave but we don’t know who he is.” My goal for the day was to get him to remember my name. I asked him when I picked him up if he knew my name and he said no. I told him again. When we got back to his house I asked if he knew my name and he said no then he turned around and said “bye Carl.”
I chose to be a CASA in big part because I miss Khloe and Vally. Sitting at a movie I didn't want to see with a little boy did make my heart warm:)

Another snow boarding lesson

Sean wanted another snow boarding lesson. It worked out well today as he was the only one in his group so he ended up with a private lesson. He had a good time. I wanted to stop over at Lynn's to pick up a form I've been trying to get from him.Wendy didn't want me to come over she didn't want to be "bothered" and she didn't want to "wake Lynn up." It was 10:30 am. I think Lynn has Alzheimer's and I am not sure why Wendy doesn't want me to see him. For the past six months whenever I try to call him he doesn't answer and his phone goes straight to voice mail When I text he doesn't answer. Catherine hasn't talked to him since August. I talked to him a couple weeks ago but I'm quite concerned about what is going on in his life. I don't know why he can't answer a phone anymore or return calls. I don't know if he's forgotten how. Since September when I want to talk to him I have to call Wendy and tell her to have him call me.

How did this little boy get so big so fast.

Beavers in the pond and Valentine's Day

If the weather is walkable I walk down to the park and back every day. I noticed a couple trees by the pond on the frontage road were chopped down which I thought was weird. The other day there were a couple guys cleaning out the roots in the drains from the mountain that feed the pond and stream.  I said I thought the chopped trees were weird. The guy said "it's beavers." I walked down an took a closer look and sure enough there are beavers in that pond. I've noticed the last couple years the frogs are gone which I assume is a bad reflection on the environment and water quality but at least it's conducive to beaver.

For Valentine's and our 21st anniversary we went  a show called "Love and Laugh" at an event center in Syracuse. It was a different way to spend Valentines. It was nice to spend it with Catherine and Kyle. If only we'd known we could have taken a bottle of wine.

Book Battles practice

I'm coaching Sean's book battle team and we had an after school practice. It's early out today because of parent teacher conferences. They worked really hard for an hour and then they got silly. They are doing really well, win or lose they are having fun.

Sean ended up with a team that he would not usually hang out with. It's been fun having him hang out with kids he wouldn't usually hang out with.

Jacob isn't really on the team but comes to provide emotional support.

So much snow

It's been a good snow year, mostly snowing in the mountains. My favorite, snow in the mountains rain in the valley. Monday we got a big snow storm. We had 18 inches at our house. Today is Thursday and it's snowing again. They had a late start date for Sean's school. I had Linda work for me so I didn't have to drive in. Carter was in St George for the weekend watching the Super Bowl so he didn't have to go in.

Chickens are not loving life.

I went for a walk Tuesday. It was cold only 28 degrees. This was the only dog I saw in the park.

February

February is here and spring is around the corner. It's Sean's last year of elementary school. That just blows my mind. How can he possibly be getting ready for Jr High. I'm not ready!!! He is but I'm not. I miss my Khloe and Vally. I know they are growing and changing as fast as Sean and doing it 2500 miles a way. It's been less than a month since I've seen them but it feels longer.

I donated blood at city hall on Friday. It took 10 minutes and other people were done in 3 and 5. I don't know if  the needle was near a valve or if I am just a slow bleeder.

Friday Sean played hooky from school and went skiing with Tyson, Jameson and Catherine. He had a spectacular time. They went to Snow Basin and he skied the black diamond. Friday night Tyson spent the night at our house and Saturday Don took them and Mao Yu skiing at Nordic. Now Sean wants to learn to snow board.

This is Sean at 6 pm on Saturday after two days of skiing.
