Shoshone Ice Cave Road Trip

We are on a road trip to Idaho. Khloe is skating in the Sun Valley Figure Skating Championship. (Or something like that) It is about 4 1/2 hour drive. On the way about 45 minutes outside of Ketchum there are some caves made from lava tubes from an internal eruption of a volcano a couple million years ago. I looked at two different caves and we chose the Shoshone ice cave. It is a cave where they discovered ice in the cave when they blasted out a wall in the 1800's. When they blasted the wall it changed the airflow and the ice started to melt. Somewhere along the line scientist figured out what the problem was and they sealed the cave. Now it forms about 12 inches of new ice a year. It would be faster but the tours in the summer use lights and the opening of the door messes up the air flow. It's 26 degrees year round in the cave.

Nate did not like this bridge he was worried it would fall.

Prehistoric bear bones from a mother bear. They said there were bones from two cubs but someone stole them.
The Indians who first discovered the cold air thought the cave was evil and should be left alone. They say there is a spirit keeper of every cave and this face in the rock is the keeper of the ice cave. It was a fun little stop by the side of the road trip.
